1. Arrival and documents
You'll need to arrive at the test centre with your provisional licence and theory test pass details. The examiner will check these along with your eyesight, via a simple number-plate reading check, before you set off.
2. Show-me-tell-me questions
One "tell me" question is asked before you drive (for example, how you'd check your brakes work). One "show me" question is asked while you're driving (for example, demonstrating how you'd wash the windscreen using the controls).
3. General driving
The bulk of the test is general driving on a mix of road types, following the examiner's directions. They're assessing everyday driving ability — observation, control, decision-making — not trying to catch you out with anything unusual.
4. Independent driving
Around 20 minutes of the test involves driving independently, either following directions from a sat-nav-style device provided by the examiner, or following traffic signs. Minor wrong turns aren't automatically a fault — correcting calmly matters more than the mistake itself.
5. One manoeuvre
You'll be asked to carry out one manoeuvre from the set the DVSA tests, such as parallel parking, bay parking, or pulling up on the right and reversing.
6. The result
Back at the test centre, the examiner explains the result and, if applicable, talks through any faults marked. A pass allows up to 15 minor faults; a single serious or dangerous fault results in a fail. Either way, the feedback is useful — it's worth listening closely and asking questions if anything's unclear.
If the format itself feels overwhelming
Knowing the exact structure in advance, as above, tends to help most with test-day nerves — but if you're neurodivergent or experience anxiety more intensely, it's worth practising the format itself in a mock test rather than just reading about it.
